Stamped Canvas Shoes

I thought these would make a great christmas gift for a little girl, I purchased some canvas shoes and then set about decorating them.  Scroll down to see a video on how to apply images to shoe.

Materials used: Penny Black Stamps "Tiny Wishes" 30-026, Memento Tuxedo Black ink, Tissue Paper, Copic markers (YG00, YG03, RV23, RV14, YR12, B23, E33, E35, E30, E37) and Claudine Helmuth Multi Medium Matte and Gesso.

The images were stamped onto tissue paper with Memento ink and coloured with Copic markers, I then roughly cut round the images and adhered to shoe as shown in video below. Please note, it is important to test the copic colours used  on some scrap material; as the pinks and reds have a tendency to bleed, if you choose to still use these shades as I have, you must be very careful when applying the multi medium.

A variation of this technique is to use paper napkins, carefully peel apart the napkin so that you are left with a single layer and apply to the shoe in the same way as the stamped images. An example of a shoe decorated with a paper napkin can be seen here.

Thank you for visiting me today, if you would like more inspiration on non card projects I recommend hopping over to the Penny Black Blog here to see what the rest of the design team have been up to this week.

So inspiring. TFS What is gelato? For a tissue paper project, what type of tissue paper and then where do I buy it? Is it possible that it is so simple as tissue paper used with gifts?

Thank you Judy

Cathy, what an innovative idea! You never cease to amaze me. I now have an idea for a "special" present for my daughter -- an apron. My only question are you actually using "tissue paper" like the kind we use to stuff in gift bags or are you using a thin vellum? Your images look a little stiffer than it would be with tissue so I'm wondering if it is something different than what I'm thinking...or is it a special tissue paper? Thanks again for the inspiration:)

Hi thanks for your lovely comments, I use ordinary tissue paper for this (yes the sort you put in gift bags), I usually rescue it from parcels or wrapped shop packages so have never bought it, but I am sure a craft shop would stock white tissue paper.

The gesso is a base layer of white paint that primes the surface I use this one here http://www.rangerink.com/products/prod_medium_CHstudiogesso.htm but any brand that states it is suitable for fabric will do.

Hope this helps.

Absolutely stunning & so imaginative. I've never used Gesso or Matte Medium before so the video was thoroughly informative for me. Thank you for such a wealth of information. Take care of the shoulder & have a good weekend.

Can the shoes be washed?

Hi thanks for the question on washing the shoes, I have never tried it, but I personally wouldn't risk it, the Matte medium does make it so that water balls on the surface of the shoe and so you could spray with water and wipe off or use a damp cloth without risk of damage. I think the Medium wouldn't fair well in detergent and warm water though. Hope this helps

Hi, can you buy clear gesso or would I need to add color to match a colored shoe? Also does the matte medium dry clear? I attempted to do a trial pair and my color didnt come out as bright as yours. I then went back over it once I applied to the shoe. That worked better for me. As far as the markers bleeding...are the only ones that bleed reds and pinks? Thank you!

I am sorry I haven't come across a clear Gesso, basically the gesso acts as a primer for the glue, if you want a colour other than white, you could try mixing coloured acrylic paint with the gesso - although I have never tried this myself as the stamped tissue papers transparent it will show the base colour underneath (that is why I have always stuck to white.

As for colours bleeding, I would recommend you test all the colours you plan to use on a scrap first, I have so far found the reds and pinks to be the worst but I have to confess to not trying every colour.

I hope this helps answer your question
