Hang it there, Altered Wooden Heart

Hi everyone, today I have a step by step photo tutorial on how to create a decorative hook for a tea towel or face cloth.

There are two versions, one with and one without a butterfly; here are pictures of the finished hooks.

To create this altered item you will need a wooden blank heart (I got mine in a local craft shop), this one measures 2".

Then paint with Claudine Helmuth Sky Blue Studio paint

Once dry, paint over the whole area with Claudine Helmuth Blank Canvas Studio Paint, leave to dry and then lightly sand off some of the paint to reveal the blue underneath.
Then stamp Penny Black's 'Scented Message' 4239K wood stamp with Memento Rich Cocoa ink and leave to dry.
Add shading and colour to the flowers with Broken China and Chipped Sapphire distress inks; to do this place a small amount of ink on your craft sheet; spritz with water and then paint onto heart with a brush.
Age the edges of the heart by adding Walnut Stain distress ink with an ink blending tool, dry with a heat gun.
Seal with Claudine Helmuth's Matte Medium (the distress inks will run a little but this helps to add to the aged effect of the piece).
Take a piece of clear modelling film (by Stampers Anonymous) and stamp the butterfly from Penny Black's 'Flower Festival' 30-095 transparent set with Staz On Timber Brown ink and leave to dry.
Turn over the modelling film and paint onto the back of the butterfly, I have mixed some twinkling H2O paints ; Bashful Blue and Ocean Wave with a little Matte Medium by Claudine Helmuth (this stops the paint from cracking when you heat the butterfly in the next stage). I have also used a Faber Castell Dark Sepia Pitt artist pen to enhance the veins on the butterfly.

Heat the butterfly and mould into shape, add some wire antennae to finish off.
Attach a cup hook to the bottom of the heart (if you are a weakling like me, ask your partner for some help!)

You then have the choice of gluing the butterfly to the design at this stage if desired.
Apply a heavy duty foam pad to the back of the heart, it is now ready to attach to your wall.

There are more altered projects over on the Penny Black blog today, so if you have time do check them out here.

Thanks for visiting me today.
Hugs Cathy

This is terrific & so carefully detailed in the photo tutorial - I've got very little experience with these other mediums. I love your use of the brown with the blues & those copper antennae are perfect to highlight the blues.
